and somebody caring about us. ladi a gentlemen, you know, one of my favorite poets is william butler yeats. here's what he said about education. he said education is not filling a pale. it's lighting a fire. it's not filling a pail. its lighting a fire. and you can see it when the flame goes off in that students size. you can see it and feel it. it's kind of like electricity. it is the thing that makes you do what you do. it's the thing that makes everything you do worthwhile. it doesn't always happen. but when it happens, there is no feeling like it. that is why you are educators. that is why you do what you do. that is why you're so important. so it is time to live fire! blighted fire and tell these guys we will not settle indication! we will not trade off education for their priorities! we will be the best educated nation in the world! god bless you all and may god protect our troops. thank you! he used to load us onto an rv and drive us around the country to show us how great this nation is. he would tell us history of our country even if he didn't know it. we would ask him questions when we were driving through arizona. "grand-dad, why do they call this town yuma, arizona?" and he would say, "well, let me see, that's because when this town was founded, there was a gun fight and one guy shot the other and he grabbed his heart and said, 'you ma' and then died." [laughter] i talked to my grandfather all the time about this country. he tells me that, son, this country, we forget we talk always about the declaration of independence. but really, this nation was founded on a declaration of interdependence -- this recognition that we need each other. when i talk to my grandfather now, i anguish to him that we are a nation that has become so polarized, where people are so quick to identify themselves as democrat or republican before they say, first and foremost, that i am an american. they're so focused on left and right that they forget that this nation must go forward.
